UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / October 27, 2026 / Rock salt, kiln-dried logs, animal feed, bird food. Round about now, the winter lines start landing at garden centres, farm shops and agricultural merchants across the country - and they don’t arrive in friendly, easy-to-handle quantities.
A pallet of 25kg bags can easily run to a tonne, and bagged feed at agricultural merchants arrives in similar loads.
Plenty of these businesses are small. The delivery pulls up at the front of a yard that’s often gravel or cobbles rather than smooth concrete, usually with no loading dock and often no forklift on site. There might be two people to get everything off the vehicle and into the store before opening time.
Midland Pallet Trucks says that’s exactly where manual handling equipment - such as pallet trucks, stacker trucks and lift tables - earns its keep. There’s nothing to charge and nothing to plug in, so it works for a business where the people on shift might be the owner, a weekend student and whoever else is free.
Stock like this doesn’t move just once, either. A full pallet comes off the lorry, gets broken down, then its contents are moved again to the shelf or the front of the shop whenever a cold snap sends customers in looking for salt – and possibly help taking it to their own vehicle, too.
Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Midland Pallet Trucks, said, “Rural businesses get a bit of a reputation for being rough and ready, but plenty of farm shops and garden centres have a lovely tidy stockroom. The difficult bit is the last twenty yards between the lorry and the shelf, usually across a surface that’s nothing like a warehouse floor.
“That’s where wheel choice matters more than the capacity figure on the box. Bigger, harder-wearing wheels roll over gravel and ruts far more easily than small ones, so it’s worth telling whoever you buy from what your yard really looks like, not just the stockroom.
“And a cold snap doesn’t give you a week’s notice. When it turns, you want the salt out of the delivery and onto the shop floor in an afternoon, with the truck sitting ready instead of somebody going off to look for it.”
