UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / September 24, 2026 / Economic uncertainty tops small business concerns, but equipment compliance is one thing businesses can still control.

Nearly half of UK small businesses now name economic uncertainty as one of their three biggest challenges, according to Simply Business's 2026 SME Insights Report, up sharply from just 16% the year before.

Pallet Trucks UK says that with so much genuinely outside a business's control right now, it's worth remembering that equipment compliance and manual handling standards remain firmly within reach, regardless of what's happening in the wider economy.

The scale of the change is striking. A concern that barely registered for most small business owners a year ago has become one of the most cited challenges facing the sector. That kind of uncertainty can understandably make businesses cautious about spending decisions generally, including on equipment.

But treating compliance and safety standards as optional or something to revisit "when things settle down" is a risk business can't really afford to take, however uncertain everything else feels.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director at Pallet Trucks UK, said, "It's a big jump in a short space of time, and it tells you something real about how businesses are feeling at the moment. When that many owners are worried about things they genuinely can't control, like interest rates, energy costs or wider economic direction, it's understandable that other decisions start to feel harder too.

"What we'd say is that equipment compliance doesn't have to be one of those uncertain areas. Making sure pallet trucks, stackers and lift tables are properly maintained, correctly rated for the loads they're handling, and matched to current health and safety obligations is something a business can get right regardless of what's happening elsewhere.

"If anything, this is exactly the kind of environment where getting the basics solidly right matters more, not less. A business dealing with genuine uncertainty doesn't need an avoidable injury claim or enforcement issue adding to the list of things going wrong. Nobody can promise certainty about the wider economy right now - but equipment compliance is one area where businesses can still be completely in control, and that's worth holding onto."
