Consultation on Proposed Standard for Regenerated Food Contact Cellulose in China

BAAR, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / June 05, 2026 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 073.26, which reports on a consultation on China’s draft national standard for regenerated cellulose food contact materials (FCM) and articles.

Announced by the World Trade Organization (WTO) on May 12, 2026, the proposed standard from China’s National Health Commission sets out key requirements, including clear definitions, examples and clarification of technical specifications. It also permits the use of GB 31604.1 ‘General Rules for Migration Test of Food Contact Materials and Products’ and GB 5009.156 ‘General Principle of Migration Test Pre-treatment Method of Food Contact Materials and Their Products’ for migration testing.

The changes would impact stakeholders across the regenerated cellulose FCM supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, retailers and other intermediaries involved in placing these products on the Chinese market.

The consultation is open to comments until July 11, 2026, according to the WTO.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 073.26 includes additional technical information about the proposed standard.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 073.26 for more details.
