UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / August 25, 2026 / Warehouse and distribution operators are being advised to concentrate on the costs they can control as the Government considers changes to business rates that could leave larger logistics sites facing higher bills.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has proposed increasing business rates on large warehouses and major out-of-town developments to help fund reductions for businesses on the high street. The proposal formed part of his early plans to revive town centres, with the Government announcing a 20% cut in rates for qualifying pubs, social clubs and grassroots music venues from April 2027.

For warehouse operators, however, the question of exactly how the changes will work remains unresolved. Thresholds and other details are still to be settled, leaving businesses with limited ability to predict what their property costs could look like once the policy takes effect.

That uncertainty makes it tempting to put investment decisions on hold. But for operators already under pressure to keep costs down, there are more immediate ways to improve the numbers.

Reviewing how goods move around a warehouse is one place to start. Handling equipment such as pallet trucks, stackers and lift tables is used throughout the working day, yet it is easy for businesses to carry on using the same trucks and processes simply because they have always worked that way. 

A closer look can reveal unnecessary journeys, equipment that is poorly matched to the loads being moved or opportunities to make routine jobs quicker.

Phil Chesworth, Managing Director of Pallet Trucks UK, said businesses do not need to wait for the Government to settle its plans before looking for savings.

“None of us knows exactly where the business rates changes will land yet, if they will at all, so there is little value in making decisions based on speculation. What operators can do is look closely at their own operation and find the things that are costing time and money today.

“That includes the equipment being used every day. A pallet truck is a fairly simple piece of kit, but if the right equipment makes a job easier or removes a few unnecessary movements from every trip around the warehouse, those small gains soon add up.”
