Mission Spiritus and Columbia Climate School Embark on Faroe Islands Research Expedition

UNITED KINGDOM / AGILITYPR.NEWS / July 11, 2025 / Mission Spiritus, the pioneering environmental campaign uniting science, exploration, and education, is set to launch its latest scientific expedition to the Faroe Islands, taking place 16 - 26 July 2025. Led by renowned polar explorer and Mission Spiritus founder Alan Chambers MBE, this journey marks the third of seven major science-led missions, following the success of the Antarctica Expedition (November 2023 - January 2024) and Oman Expedition (January 2025).

A Global Call to Action Mission Spiritus is a bold and far-reaching initiative designed to drive environmental research, inspire the next generation of stewards, and raise awareness of one of the planet’s most urgent challenges: micro and nanoplastic pollution. The campaign aims to:

  • Advancing research into the presence and impact of micro and nanoplastics in remote ecosystems.

  • Studying human resilience and adaptability in extreme environments.

  • Inspiring millions of children to plant and protect forests, creating a legacy of environmental preservation.

About the Faroe Islands Expedition Over ten days, the expedition team; Alan Chambers MBE, Billy Perham, and Dr. Maureen Raymo of Columbia University will traverse the rugged terrain of the Faroe Islands, supported by local expert Thurid Samró. Using land, sea, and foot travel, the team will access the archipelago’s most remote areas to collect water, sediment, and air samples.

Key Goals of the Faroe Islands Expedition

  • Scientific Discovery: Conduct the most comprehensive sampling of micro and nanoplastics ever undertaken in this North Atlantic Island chain.
  • Research Impact: Partner with Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to analyse the collected data and support global environmental policy and action.
  • Public Awareness: Highlight the realities of plastic pollution in even the planet’s most isolated regions and promote urgent environmental stewardship.

A Partnership for the Planet Mission Spiritus - Faroe Islands is delivered in collaboration with the Columbia Climate School’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a world-leading institute in environmental science. This partnership reinforces the mission’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research and informing practical, global responses to plastic pollution.

Media Opportunities Alan Chambers MBE will be available for interviews upon his return to the UK at the end of July 2025. Journalists are invited to explore the scientific goals, personal insights, and broader ambitions of the Mission Spiritus campaign.
