SGS Highlights Sweden’s Proposed PFAS Restrictions for Consumer Products
BAAR, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / August 25, 2026 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 113.26, focusing on Sweden’s proposal to introduce restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in certain consumer products.
PFAS comprise a large group of substances that are receiving increasing regulatory attention globally due to environmental and human health concerns.
In July 2026, Sweden’s Ministry of Climate and Enterprise issued a memorandum proposing national restrictions on PFAS in certain consumer products. If adopted, the proposal would amend existing national legislation governing the handling, import and export of chemical products.
The proposal aligns the definition of PFAS with that used under EU packaging legislation and is intended as an interim national measure while broader EU-wide PFAS restrictions under REACH continue to be developed. Sweden has indicated that the national measure would be repealed once equivalent EU legislation enters into force.
Stakeholders throughout the supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, retailers and other intermediaries operating in Sweden, would be affected by the proposal.
