SGS Reports on Rhode Island’s Amendments to the Consumer PFAS Ban Act of 2024

BAAR, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / July 09, 2026 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 090.26, which focuses on the latest amendments to the Consumer PFAS Ban Act of 2024 (the Act) in the US state of Rhode Island. The amendments clarify and strengthen enforcement provisions and establish conditions for exemptions.

The per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) family of chemicals, known as ‘forever chemicals,’ is increasingly restricted due to their bioaccumulative characteristics and the serious harm some of them have been found to cause to human and environmental health.

Originally enacted in 2024, the Act regulated the use of intentionally added PFAS in specified categories of consumer products. The state later expanded the scope of the Act in 2025 to include firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE).

The latest amendment to the Act, H 7734, was signed into law by the governor of Rhode Island on June 19, 2026, to clarify and strengthen enforcement provisions. Changes in the Act became effective on June 19, 2026, the date of enactment (upon passage). The amendments affect stakeholders across the consumer products supply chain, including manufacturers, importers and distributors operating in Rhode Island.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 090.26 includes further information on the amendment’s enforcement provisions, renewable exemptions and eligibility criteria for exempt products.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 090.26 for more details.
