SGS highlights updated Belgian requirements for food contact ceramics

BAAR, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / October 06, 2026 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 126.26, highlighting Belgium’s updated requirements, including stricter lead and cadmium migration limits for food contact ceramics.

The Royal Decree of July 19, 2026 (C-2026/006323) amends the Royal Decree of May 1, 2006, on the declaration of compliance and performance criteria for the method of analysis for ceramic articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Published on September 11, 2026, the amendment implements the Benelux Committee of Ministers Decision M (2024) 5 of November 29, 2024, on food contact ceramics.

Alongside stricter migration limits for lead and cadmium, the July 19 Royal Decree includes provisions allowing economic operators to consider specific factors when placing food contact ceramics on the market. The decree entered into force on May 29, 2026, and affects stakeholders across the food contact ceramic materials and articles supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, retailers and other intermediaries operating in Belgium.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 126.26 provides further information on the applicable categories of food contact ceramics, the revised migration limits for lead and cadmium and the factors economic operators may consider when placing these products on the market.
