The CARE Project, Inc. Adds End-of-Life Doula Services for Breast Cancer Patients

RIVERSIDE, CA, / AGILITYPR.NEWS / June 08, 2026 / “I discovered part of my true purpose in walking alongside those with a limited time left. I value the trust that patients and their loved ones place in me during such a personal and trying time,” said Carrie Madrid.

The CARE Project, Inc., a Riverside-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals diagnosed with breast cancer, is formally announcing the expansion of its emotional support services to include End-of-Life Doula care. Founded by Stage III breast cancer survivor Carrie Madrid, the organization now offers specialized, non-medical companionship and advocacy for those nearing the end of life or facing a terminal diagnosis.

Carrie Madrid, who serves as the nonprofit’s President, discovered a profound calling to walk alongside patients during their most personal and trying times after spending eight years working closely with the breast cancer community. Her experience revealed that many patients and their families yearned for emotional support and companionship beyond traditional settings.

“I discovered part of my true purpose in walking alongside those with a limited time left. I value the trust that patients and their loved one’s place in me during such a personal and trying time,” said Madrid.

The services she offers are for individuals who are nearing the end of life or have received a terminal diagnosis with a short life expectancy

Compassionate, Certified Care

To meet this need, Madrid earned her Certified CareDoula® designation from the School for Accompanying the Dying. As an End-of-Life Doula, also known as a "death doula", she provides holistic, non-medical support that complements traditional hospice care.

Her services include:

  • Legacy Projects: Assisting patients in documenting their life stories or creating farewell messages for loved ones.
  • Vigil Support: Sitting with patients at the very end to ensure they are not alone and to provide respite for family members.
  • Advocacy and Coordination: Helping patients express their final wishes, setting up their environment for comfort, and facilitating difficult conversations.
  • Bereavement Support: Providing a compassionate presence for families during the grieving process.

Commitment to the Community

The CARE Project, Inc. remains dedicated to its mission of reducing the financial and emotional burdens of breast cancer. Madrid provides these doula services at no cost to patients who come through the nonprofit. While the organization serves both men and women nationwide through its "Men 2" program, its direct emotional support services remain focused on the Inland Empire of Southern California.

Since its incorporation in 2013, The CARE Project has provided thousands of dollars in financial assistance for rent, utilities, and treatment co-pays. The addition of End-of-Life Doula services marks a significant milestone in the organization's holistic approach to patient care, ensuring that "no one walks this journey of life and death alone."

The CARE Project, Inc. provides a range of essential services to breast cancer survivors, including:

          ●      Financial support for treatment co-pays, rent, utilities, groceries and transportation.

          ●      Emotional support through peer mentoring and the Survivor Social Club.
