GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / AGILITYPR.NEWS / September 19, 2025 / SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has issued SafeGuardS 130.25 to inform stakeholders of key findings from the UK Office of Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) Product Safety Database annual report for 2024–2025.
The PSD captures safety alerts raised by market surveillance authorities and provides insight into where activity is concentrated by product sector, the most frequently reported harms and the corrective actions taken.
For the reporting period from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, the PSD received a total of 1,418 notifications covering 1,792 products. Risk levels were assigned as follows: 24% (335) were classed as serious, 12% (173) as high, 8% (114) as medium and 10% (143) as low. No risk level was assigned in 44% (620) of cases and 2% (33) were inconclusive.
Electrical appliances and equipment accounted for the largest proportion of notifications (26%), followed by toys (19%) and cosmetics (12%). The most common sources of harm reported were fire (23%), injuries (19%) and electric shock (15%). Harm sources are only assigned to products listed in the PSD as unsafe or unsafe and non-compliant which comprised 906 of the 1,792 product types investigated.
Authorities most frequently responded to unsafe products by rejecting imports at the border (35%), followed by destruction of the product (19%) and removal of the product listing (13%).
Compared with the previous reporting period, 2023–2024, when there were 2,258 notifications covering 2,772 products, the number of recalls has decreased. Electrical appliances and equipment remained the most frequently notified product category, while toys and cosmetics switched positions between the two periods. The most common sources of harm in 2023–2024 were chemical (22.3%), electric shock (17.4%) and injuries (15.8%).
